Parallel Lives, Plutarch - Version by Girolamo Pompei 1870
1870 edition of Plutarch's "Parallel Lives," translated by Girolamo Pompei and with the author's life written by Professor Silvestro Centofanti. This edition was published in Naples and includes engraved illustrations. The "Parallel Lives" are a series of biographies of illustrious Greek and Roman men, paired to highlight common virtues or vices. Plutarch's goal was not so much to "make history" as to outline the lives, behaviors, and character of his subjects.
The biographies are organized in pairs to compare famous figures from antiquity, such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, among others. Plutarch is considered one of the most prolific authors of Greco-Roman antiquity, with 48 biographies and 78 treatises that have come down to us.
